The primary objective of this course is to provide an overview of enzymatic and bioinspired systems that may be used in the development of sustainable technology. Part of the course will focus on studying the catalytic mechanisms of enzymes involved in fundamental processes for sustainable development, such as energy production and storage (photosystems, hydrogenases), environmental pollutant degradation, and biomass valorisation (oxidases and oxygenases). The course will also cover the fundamental concepts of bioinspired catalyst design, including several examples of synthetic and artificial enzymes with natural or abiotic reactivity. Furthermore, strategies for immobilizing biomolecules will be discussed with the goal of incorporating biocatalysts into biosensors and bioreactors.
